What to Pack in Your Summer Carry-On

There are two types of travelers: those who check their bags, and those who sail through the airport with a nimble carry-on. I used to be in the former camp, routinely stuffing my suitcase with extra pairs of sandals and sarongs I wore exactly zero times while on vacation.

Today, I’ve smartened up to the benefits of packing light. No more lingering by the squeaky baggage claim conveyer belt after a particularly long flight.

Here are some summer essentials to pack in your carry-on:

1. The Multitasking Sarong. I love bringing along a wrap that doubles as a scarf on brisk nights and a sarong on beach days. I’m particularly fond of the always-cheerful summer wraps by Roller Rabbit.

2. The Day-to-Night Sandal. Resist the temptation of packing a different pair of sandals for each vacation day; you’re better off bringing a few pairs that look as smart with a pair of denim shorts as they do with with dressier dresses. These suede sandals have been my go-to for several years now. They’re deceptively comfortable and highly versatile.

3. A Packable Sun Hat. There’s nothing more pitiful than wearing a crumpled up sun hat on vacation. Looks like a wet napkin landed on your head. Skip the structured straw hats and bring along a canvas one instead. I like how unfussy this bucket hat is for travel…I simply fold it in half and toss it into my suitcase.

4. A Travel Size Toiletry Kit. I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, but having a pre-packed dopp kit on hand is a game-changer. No more transferring full-size tubes of toothpaste and lotion into an empty toiletry bag last minute. And if you’re looking for a cute gift, or a gift to self, look no further than this mini skincare set from Drunk Elephant.

5. An All-Day Tote. Heading to the beach? Strolling around the local market? You’ll want to bring a tote that’s totes chic and perhaps slightly more festive than ye olde Brooklinen canvas bag. For carry-on packing purposes, I love a canvas tote that’s foldable and doesn’t scream “I’m a beach tote!!” should you need it for other purposes. This roomy one by SIR is simply the chicest and most practical.
