Easy Ways to Make Your Home Look Instantly Chic

If you’ve been eager for a home refresh, there are many ways to chic-ify your space without giving your furniture the boot. Not that your furniture needed a booting! Perhaps you’re just looking to achieve peak chic with your space. Here’s how it’s done:

1. Add mini lights to your dining table. The dining room accessory you never knew you needed, these rechargeable LED lamps add a real smartness to your dining table. While “rechargeable LED lamps” sound like the opposite of chic, the slim stand and micro lampshade immediately elevate dinner—even yesterday’s pizza!

2. Throw down a throw. The oldest trick in the book of chic is the throw blanket. Sick of looking at your cat hair-covered sofa? Throw down a throw. Can’t seem to expunge the lingering red wine stain from your sofa cushion? Throw. Some favorites du jour: the alpaca throws by The Citizenry, or the Hermes-y-looking ones from Williams Sonoma.

3. Layer your rugs. Going against my inner minimalist here with this maximalist move. Aside from adding “texture” and “dimension” to your space, adding an extra rug just makes things feel cozier (cozy chic!). So if you’ve decided that your sisal carpet is looking a little blah, add a sheepskin throw or a Turkish rug to the mix. Consider them little throw blankets for your floor.

4. Introduce a sculptural element. The sculptures I had in mind are not the Michelangelo variety, though that could certainly work too. Sculptures add height and interest to your coffee table or dining table, and they’re a fun way to switch things up outside your bouquet of flowers or massive candle. Opt for something abstract like this OBJET, or something a bit more representational, like this basic bust.

5. Upgrade your fruit basket. I love the look of a wide and shallow bowl made of teak or reclaimed wood. It’s the perfect kitchen centerpiece, because it actually serves a purpose (I have little patience for decorative tchochkes in the kitchen, where every square inch counts!). I love this footed one by Terrain, and this wilder-looking one with handles. Pro tip: make sure your wood bowl complements the other wood finishes in your kitchen before purchasing.
